What is going green and what does going green mean? Going green is a phrase used to describe daily methods to save the environment.
You've heard the phrase 'going green in the workplace'. You are probably vaguely aware of what it means, but you aren't quite sure what all is involved. This is the case with many workplaces
today, and if you are serious about protecting our environment, then it is important to let your employees know that they need to make some changes in the way they do things in the workplace. Going green activities should form part of a company's corporate social responsibility program.
Know that the act of going green is much more than saying that you care about the environment. If you want the workplace to actually go green, then there must be communication. There should be communication in the workplace anyway, but this will require a concentrated information and behavior change process.
So let's answer this question in more detail: what does going green mean?
Going green is the act of using more energy efficient appliances. For instance instead of a 60 watt halogen bulb, switch to a more energy efficient light bulb? In the beginning this will be more expensive, but the new light bulbs last much longer and will save costs in the long term.
You can also replace the break room microwave, copiers, computers, etc. Let's take computer monitors for example. They can take up an awful lot of energy, especially if you are still using CRT monitors. You can switch to LCD or Liquid Crystal Display monitors to save energy. Once again it is more expensive, but your power bill will definitely reflect the change.
Your employees will need to start recycling. First of all, determine what should and should not be recycled, and then set up recycling bins at necessary points. Once again though, communication is a requirement here. You need to let your employees know that they need to recycle. Not only should you drill this into them, you should tell them WHY they need to recycle. Tell them that it protects not only the environment, but also our precious natural resources.
These are a few great goal setting suggestions that should be put into practice as soon as possible, and as long as you communicate and initiate behavior change programs, most of your employees will play along!
There are many government programs that deal with going green, and ways to prevent climate change in all areas of our communities eg kids go green initiatives for schools going green, for example educate children on the environment.
