United Nations Commission Sustainable Development
World Business Council Sustainable Development
The United Nations Commission Sustainable Development movement came about as the world recognized that there are major problems with the environment. The majority of these problems are directly related to human beings and their use of natural resources. Pollution also plays a major role in the problems that have become ever present, and all of them are a contributor of global warming.
In 1992 the United Nations Convened and discussed matters related to environmental protection. It was agreed that something needed to be done, and for that reason, it was determined that the United Nations Commission Sustainable Development movement was to be started. From this decision was spawned a 300 page plan for achieving this in the 21st century, and with that the world officially went green.
In order to understand United Nations Commission Sustainable Development, you have to take into account that our world is precious, and it is not something that is to be taken for granted. While the United Nations Commission Sustainable Development cannot force anyone to adhere to their guidelines, certain countries and governments may offer incentives for doing so. This can extend to the workplace and employees who are expected to behave in a certain manner if their workplace.
There is pressure for companies to take part in sustainable behaviors and to follow the United Nations Commission Sustainable Development guidelines. This will involve performing the necessary actions to prevent global warming. Not all workplaces are enforcing United Nations Commission Sustainable Development guidelines, but it is only a matter of time before more companies will be required to do so.
The United Nations Commission Sustainable Development continues to meet, trying to find ways to better our world. In some European countries, standard light bulbs have been removed from store shelves in favor of energy efficient bulbs. This was not received favorably, but it is a step in the right direction.
Sustainable development issues such as what are the greenhouse gases, solutions to ozone depletion, list of renewable energy source, how to save energy at home and at work and greater Paducah sustainability issues are discussed.
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a global association of international companies manage sustainable development in business.
The Council’s objectives are to:
- Be a leading business advocate on sustainable development;
- Participate in policy development to create the right framework conditions for business to make an effective contribution to sustainable human progress;
- Develop and promote the business case for sustainable development;
- Demonstrate the business contribution to sustainable development solutions and share leading edge practices among members;
- Contribute to a sustainable future for developing nations and nations in transition.
The important thing is that we are doing something to take care of a world that has taken care of us for thousands of years. In other words, we are paying back what we owe.
We do campaigns to create awareness around these issues:
Sustainable Development in the Workplace
The definition of sustainable development is the development that adequately meets all the needs of the present time without having to compromise the abilities of all future generations being able to meet needs of their own. This means that sustainable development will make a definite impact on our environment and will also try to minimize damage to the environment.
It is therefore obvious that all businesses and organizations should be involved in sustainable development in a big way. Today, "green causes" are getting to be highly popular with one and all thus making sustainable development good not only for sales but also for PR. Large corporations are going out of the way to present themselves as being "environment friendly".
It is important to adopt business principles that are environmentally friendly and sound and then making sure that these are put into action. Sustainable development is a goal that is worthy. Everyone knows that the environment, society and the economy are all interconnected and it helps to give our environment the attention it needs so as to ensure a pleasant and healthy community.
The main step towards having sustainable development in the workplace is making sure that there are certain sustainable development policies and principles to follow. There are websites that offer sustainable development resources for companies that want to make sure there are reductions in costs and an increase in profits by implementing improved environmental performance. There are Government programs that can aid and provide good help for companies to put all their sustainable development plans in action.
It is pretty easy to operate a "green" business that is eco-friendly. One of the easiest ways to start is recycling. Recycling is very important and reduces the amount of waste material in offices. Take the following steps towards sustainable development in the workplace:
- Reduce energy by almost 25% by turning off equipment when not in use. It is found that computers that are turned off at the end of each working day save you 50% in energy bills.
- Encourage the employees to read email messages and then determine if it is necessary to get them printed.
- Double sided documents should be produced.
- Make sure that employees close all taps to avoid wastage of water.
- All paper supplies should have the maximum recycled content.
- Toilet reservoirs should have displacement dams that displace 4 liters per flush.
- Fax cover sheets and a fax modem should be installed so as to reduce all waste paper.
- Suppliers who are willing to take back "packaging" so that they can be reused should be engaged.
- Instead of buying new furniture in the office, it is important to first check if you can get the existing furniture refurbished which is not only less expensive but good for the environment.
Use energy saving posters and behavior change campaigns to engage with employees and change how things are done.
Even small environmental friendly and sustainable development actions have a huge impact. The constant and determined reduction of water use, energy and paper will make a difference to the environment and the company's economy. Running double-sided copies through out the year is a small thing but one that will save you a lot of paper!
Systems for solar water heating will help cut the costs of energy as well as save energy. Building wind farms and solar panels is an excellent idea for those companies that can afford the expense.
