It is faster to send an email and copy it to five different people than it is to coordinate all five people into one office, right? It is also much faster to send out a text message while heading to a meeting with someone else than it is to make a stop off at the person's desk to tell them something.
You can also eliminate talking to the loud mouth who like to rattle on and on by sending them a quick message instead!
It's true that we lose the personal touch that came with dropping by a coworker's desk to tell them something or meeting with the boss in his office, but the time that is now saved with these modern advances in technology has made the work environment more efficient.
The things that are possible today were simply unimaginable just a generation or two ago. If I need to meet with coworkers who are currently working from Japan I don't have to go to Japan or try to coordinate everyone over a scratchy phone line. I can simply set up a video conference online and carry on a complete meeting with slideshows and everything!
The amount of time that is saved by sending out a mass email and doing other types of technologically savvy communications in the workplace is enormous when you add it up over time! We are now more efficient in the workplace than ever before because we have embraced all that technology has made available to us.
Business communication activities should include a mix of electronic and traditional methods.
