Corporate Social Responsibility

The definition of social responsibility is the obligation an organization's management team has towards the interests and welfare of the society or community that provides it with resources and environment to not only survive but flourish. At the same time society is affected by the policies and the actions of the company. In other words, social responsibility is the way your company gives back to and takes care of the community it is located in and the greater society we are all a part of. There are a number of positive examples of companies acting socially responsible. Starting with the way the company operates on a day to day basis. Offering recycling bins at the workplace so that employees and visitors can recycle their trash instead of throwing it in the dumpster. Recycling office waste such as paper and empty ink cartridges are also small but effective ways to support the definition of social responsibility. In doing this your company is showing your employees on a daily basis how to make the work day more socially responsible.

The work shouldn't stop there. Your company can also contribute to the community at large. Obviously one way that your company is upholding the definition of social responsibility is by providing jobs to people in the area, but your company could also provide school supplies to local schools or sponsor a local event for the public to come and enjoy. Granted, this may be easier for larger companies, but smaller companies can take part as well.

A great way for smaller companies to get involved is by sponsoring youth groups or youth sports such as PeeWee football or soccer. Helping raise money for a local charity or the food shelter, if money is an object you and your employees can dedicate time helping out at the homeless shelter or reading to children in the library. Some nursing facilities also have "adopt a grandparent" that your company could take part in. There are numerous ways, big and small that any size company can get involved in the community.

Making sure that your company is using ethical labor practices is another way to demonstrate social responsibility. Not only within your own facility, but by not allowing or supporting manufacturers that produce goods through sweat shops or dealing with companies that are not doing what they can to preserve the environment.

There are dozens of ways that your company can uphold the definition of social responsibility. Work with your employees to come up with other ways to get involved and support the community either through work practices, donations of money or donations of time. Social responsibility is not the responsibility of one company or one person; it is the responsibility of every individual.

National Donut Day

National Donut Day falls on the first Friday of June every year. It started as a fundraiser in 1938, for the Chicago Salvation Army to honor the Salvation Army volunteers, who served doughnuts to armies during the World War I.

Many doughnut shops and franchises offer free doughnuts on this day in the United States. Celebrating the ring-shaped, deep-fried and sweetened pastry, Donut Day is a fun holiday for everyone.

In the workplace, this holiday can be celebrated by serving free doughnuts at the cafeteria. Different campaigns can be organized in accordance to the holiday, such as selling everything within the doughnut theme to raise funds for the needy. It may not necessarily be for charity, but the money raised can be used to add to the organization's funds.

By having such activity, all workers of various levels can participate and work together for a good cause. It will encourage better communication, loyalty and unity within the organization.
