Definition of Behavior Modification in the workplace. What Does Behavior Modification Mean?

Used for years by educators and parents, behavior modification programs have shown such proven results that some have been adapted for the workplace.  

 

What exactly is this?  Behavior organizational behavior articlemodification has been in practice for approximately 100 years, and since the 1950s has become a concept used to "modify behavior" to get desired results.

This this definition of behavior modification incorporates two methods of changing behaviors.  The first is reinforcement of good behavior (rewards/praise/etc), and the "extinction" of bad behavior.

Positive reinforcement in a behavior modification program is generally accepted at a ratio of five compliments per each complaint.  These can be simple words of encouragement, atta boys, or a pat on the back. Many times receiving compliments will inspire a child or employee to work harder to positive goals.

A work environment needs to minimize negative behaviors in order to increase morale, productivity and ultimately the company's earnings. A well run company with supportive staff will produce more and have less employee turnover than a company with a negative work environment.
