Birthday wishes sample tips and ideas for celebrating staff birthdays in the workplace
Although some people dread their birthdays, for many, birthdays are a time to celebrate and enjoy time with friends and loved ones. Because most people work so many long hours, the office is a type of home away from home, and their co-workers are like a second family. And for those who don't have a family at home, or who have transferred to the office from a different state, their co-workers may be their only "family". It is good PR and a relationship building exercise to acknowledge staff birthdays.
It would probably be a good idea to assign a committee to handle staff birthdays. This committee would be responsible for contacting office members by email and making sure that everyone is aware of the birthdays each month.
These emails can be sent on the last Friday of each month so the staff can be aware of the upcoming birthdays. Because of budget restraints, it probably won't be possible to have a party for each individual worker, however, maybe the office would be interested having one party to celebrate all of the office birthdays. If the office is very large, and
one birthday party a month seems too impersonal, there could be two staff birthday parties; one at the first of the month, and one mid-month. Not only will this make those who have a birthday feel special, but a fun, laid back party will help improve office morale and improve productivity.
When the birthday committee is first formed, it should be decided if birthday gifts will be distributed. They could also determine holiday gift ideas for women and men and use party celebration clipart or other imagery to brighten up the artwork.
Once the decision is made, it is best to stick with the decision and then have a re-evaluation meeting at the end of the yea
r. If the policy on gift giving is changed halfway through the year, those who didn't receive gifts on their birthdays will be disappointed, and it may cause strife amongst the employees.
When the office parties are originally planned, it is probably a good idea to have cake or cupcakes and punch or ice cream, until funds can be set aside to distribute gifts. When choosing cake, choose white or vanilla cake because a lot of people are allergic to chocolate, and the last thing you would want is for someone to feel left out or awkward because they can't have the chocolate cake. Since the parties will most likely be held at the office during work hours, alcoholic beverages should not be served. It is highly unprofessional, and the employees will be tempted over indulge and that will impede office productivity.
If the office decides to give gifts to employees, the birthday committee should consider taking inventory of the birthdays for the entire year and buy gifts in bulk. Coffee mugs with funny sayings are always popular gifts in office settings. Some other practical gifts are: mouse pads, pens, notepads, etc. It might also be fun to hold a birthday gift raffle every 3 months.
Every person who has had a birthday in the past 3 months could be given a ticket, and a drawing can be held for a bigger prize. Another fun idea is to hand out happy birthday stickers to the rest of the office and have them "sticker" the birthday man or woman every time they see them. Keep it fun and light. The last thing you want is for employees to dread their birthday at work!
Even though there may only be one or two birthday parties a month, the staff birthday committee might want send out we
ekly reminder emails at the beginning of each week so that the employees can tell those who have birthdays "Happy birthday!"
A simple gesture such as telling a co-worker happy birthday birthday can ease office tensions. Or maybe someone who was having a horrible birthday and feeling like no one cared about them would start having a better day because their co-workers told them "happy birthday". While it is a good idea to encourage friendly office competition when it comes to meeting goals, it is not a good idea to encourage employees to constantly compete. If the office workers are constantly at odds, they will never be able to work together and further the company.
If the birthday committee gets everyone excited about the office parties, the employees will begin to look forward to staff birthdays, and it will help with office communication and team building. A lot of times people refuse to have positive interaction with others because they feel that it's them against the world. Once they understand that not everyone is out to get them, they will drop their guard. When the office members can act as a unit for the purpose of fu
rthering the company, instead of feeling as if the office is the survival of the fittest, the company will flourish.
